After the nursery incident, Sebastian kept her from visiting Robert and Aurora. “Until you’re ready and I’m satisfied you know how to defend yourself, and use your senses to detect danger, you’re staying here.”

So Skylar spent nearly every waking moment with her new tutor over the following two weeks. He taught her how to fight dirty in Skin and box with her fists. He taught her how to use her emerging senses to find water sources, and use her nocturnal vision to spot predators and prey.

And he taught her what flying was like.

Dragons had a cloaking shield to hide their forms from Skins, Sebastian told her. A very old dragon or a dying dragon lost that magick, which was why clan was so important. Clan protected the senior dragons, and kept them hidden.

The first time she actually saw him shift in the daylight rattled her nerves. Sebastian stood in front of her as a man, and then before she could blink, he became a giant beast, with a long neck, two horns and a body that could crush tractor trailers. But when she looked into his eyes, his lizard eyes, she still saw the man.

“Hi,” he’d rumbled. “Climb on.”

She’d climbed onto his back, clinging to one of the protruding spikes along his spine. Skylar expected to be terrified. Instead, she was exhilarated. And then he beat his enormous wings and took off into the sky, the rush of wind whipping her hair back, her heart racing with excitement.

This was what she’d dreamed of her entire life.

When he dipped down low, skirting the edge of a nearby lake, she laughed with delight.

And when he came to land, she felt a keen disappointment.

Today was more academic. Sebastian spent the morning with her in the enormous library. He handed her a journal filled with important information about her clan, including the phone number of her grandfather’s home in North Carolina.

“When you’re ready, call him. I’m sure he’d love to talk to you,” he told her.

Then he gave her ancient, leather-bound volumes on their kind. She learned that dragons had served the Others, forming lasting friendships.

“The dragon clans are all different. First, there’s Clan Fury. They’re nocturnal and guardians of the night skies. Clan Ciamoth are the wise, the guardians of knowledge of the ages. They’re the most peaceful. They’re also soothsayers who can predict the future,” Sebastian told her as she leafed through the book.

“And my clan?” She was curious about the family she’d never met. Hard to believe she actually had a clan, let alone one that was quarreling and fierce.

“Clan Rhagos.” His blue gaze met hers and she saw the interest flare. “They’re the guardians of passion. Known as the ones who inspire love.”

“Love? And they’re fighting each other.” She shook her head.

“Love is a fierce emotion.” He stretched out his long legs and regarded the tips of his polished loafers. Today he wore a long-sleeved white shirt with blue jeans. The urbane, yet casual Sebastian.

“Why do you always wear shoes that look expensive?”

He rubbed his chin, scraping a hand along the bristles of his day beard.
